Welcome to Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services (ADWAS)
ADWAS
provides comprehensive services to Deaf and Deaf-Blind victims/survivors of
sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. ADWAS believes that violence is
a learned behavior and envisions a world where violence is not tolerated.
ADWAS was founded in 1986 and is located in Seattle, Washington. The ADWAS
model has been replicated in 19 Deaf communities across the United States.
ADWAS
established the nation's first
transitional housing program, "A Place of Our Own." We are committed to providing accessible and safe housing for Deaf and Deaf-Blind women and their children.

Executive Director of ADWAS announces her
retirement.
Marilyn J. Smith, the Founder and Executive Director of the
Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services (ADWAS) announced her plans to
retire from the agency on its 25th anniversary, March 28, 2011.
ADWAS began in the basement of Marilyn’s home in 1986 with two very
part-time staff and a budget of $4,000. It has since grown into a
full service agency for Deaf and Deaf-Blind victims/survivors of
